Since 5000 BC, the area close to where the current Barcelona lies has been inhabited if prehistoric dwellings and diverse tombs are anything to go by. Depending on what you want to believe, legends tell of the Grecian hero, Hercules, being the founder of the area while another more tolerable lore tell of the father of Hannibal of Carthage, Hamilcar Barcar as the founder of the area, who gave the city the title of Barcino around Third Century BC in honor of his family.
